If you’ve ever been in the market for a new vehicle, chances are you’ve mulled over the question of car vs. SUV before. It’s a debate that always seems to be looming, and as simple as it seems, it can be difficult to know whether you are making the right decision for your lifestyle. Don’t worry, Steve Landers Auto Group is here to help! It’s important to think about the things that are a priority for you, so we broke this debate down to make it a little bit easier to consider all angles.

Drivability

One of the first things you need to think about when trying to decide on a car or SUV is drivability. How will you be using your vehicle, what do you want your driving experience to be like, and what do you want to avoid? In many ways, sedans are easier to drive than SUVs. This is especially true in more urban areas. Generally speaking, sedans have better maneuverability and handling on city roads, and they just feel smoother. They are also easier to park and tend to accelerate faster than larger SUVs. It’s easier to learn to drive in a sedan, so if you’re looking for a vehicle for a new driver, it might be your best option. On the other hand, SUVs are generally much better for driving in more rural areas. They have higher ground clearance, which makes them the ideal option for those who plan to do a lot of off-road driving. You get better traction control with SUVs too, so if you live somewhere that has a lot of inclement weather, that’s something to think about. They also have higher seating, which can improve visibility pretty significantly. If visibility is a priority for you, especially if you’re on the shorter side, you might lean toward an SUV.

Seating & Cargo

When it comes to seating capacity and cargo space, it’s really important to think about your lifestyle and any potential changes in your future. Sedans can be more comfortable to ride in, but SUVs definitely take the cake when it comes to space. Sedans usually seat four to five passengers, while SUVs usually seat five to nine. If you have kids or are thinking about starting a family, this is a big thing to consider. Are you the friend that’s always giving people rides or volunteering to haul groups of people? Does your family like to take road trips? You might want to consider an SUV. SUVs offer a lot more cargo space, too. If you or your family likes to go on long adventures, go camping, or just has a lot of stuff to haul, SUVs might be more fitting for you. They are ideal for families and individuals who have animals to tote around, too. Dogs and other pets will fit much more comfortable in an SUV than a car.

Fuel efficiency

this is a big one! No one wants to spend all their money on gas, so of course you want to look at your most efficient options. Once upon a time, there was no comparison between cars and SUVs in this category. Today, it is a little bit different. Many SUVs have gotten more fuel efficient, so they can better compete with cars than they ever could before. Still, a sedan is much more likely to get better gas mileage overall. So if you are worried about your wallet or the environment, you might want to stick closer to the cars or check out SUVS with special engines, or even consider hybrid models.

Safety

Safety is a tricky category to talk about in this debate, because both cars and SUVs have pros and cons when it comes to keeping you safer. Generally, cars can be a little bit safer on city streets because of the low ground clearance and center of gravity. This makes cars less likely to tip over, which is always good. If you need to go off the main roads or drive in a lot of weather, though, the SUV will be a little bit safer. SUVs have better traction control, so you can trek through wet and icy roads with more confidence. Many of them have optional 4WD or all-wheel drive, too. You can also factor in the visibility issue, which is another safety plus for SUVs. Cars can be easier to control, though, because of their smaller size. The size can also make it easier for you to maneuver and avoid potential accidents in a sedan.

Aesthetic

Of course, the last thing you need to consider when it comes to deciding between an SUV or a sedan is aesthetic appeal. It all comes down to what you like! Sedans can have a more sleek, sporty look while SUVs tend to be more bold and stylish. If you’d rather have something subtle that doesn’t draw a lot of attention to you, go with a sedan. If you want to make a big statement with your vehicle, you might go with an SUV. Of course, you will find that there is a lot of variety when it comes to the look of both sedans and SUVs. It’s always a good idea to browse through pictures of different types of vehicles and take note of the things you find attractive and the things you could live without.

If you still can’t make a decision, you do have another option! Crossovers are right in-between sedans and SUVs, bringing in different elements from each. It offers good fuel economy and features like a sedan, while providing cargo space and off-roading features of an SUV.
