Here’s What You Need To Know About Shopping For A Used Vehicle | Steve Landers Auto Group

So you’re in the market for a new (to you) car, and you want to make sure you get the most out of buying a used model. Steve Landers Auto Group is here to help! There are many good reasons to consider buying used, and if you know what to look for, you can end up going home with a quality vehicle at a significantly discounted price. Read on to find out what we think you should know about shopping for previously-owned cars.

CPO vs. Used

If you’ve already done some research, you’ve probably seen some cars labeled as ‘Certified Pre-Owned’, or CPO, and others simply listed as ‘Used’ or even just ‘Certified’. So, is there a difference? The simple answer to that question is yes. If you’re interested in finding the highest quality vehicle you can while minimizing the risk of buying used, Certified Pre-Owned (not just Certified)  is likely your safest bet. Every car has to meet a specific criteria determined by manufacturers to achieve the CPO label. These vehicles have been thoroughly inspected, and they’re generally not more than a few years old. They also have fewer miles on them and better warranty coverage. It might seem like a no-brainer already, but every person’s priorities and budgets are different, making the decision a bit more complicated. CPO vehicles also have a higher price tag, so used might be a better option for those that can’t afford to (or just don’t want to) pay the premium for a previously owned car that’s like new. You can certainly have a great buying experience with used vehicles, too. If you’re thinking about going that route, we would suggest finding a used car that you love, then buying an extended warranty to go with it. That will narrow the gap a little bit and ensure that you’re covered in the event that anything goes wrong.

Vehicle Evaluation

Once you’ve landed on a car you’re considering purchasing, there are a few things you should do to make sure you know what you’re getting into. We know how much of that initial research is done online these days, and that’s a great way to start your car buying process. After that, though, the obvious first step is to take the car for a test drive! Test driving a car won’t tell you nearly everything you need to know, but it’ll certainly weed out any obvious issues right off the bat. If you hear any strange noises (like rattling or squeaking) or you smell smoke, you already know those are things you need to look into before you hand over your wallet. Cosmetic issues like chipped paint or hail damage can actually save you money in the long run, because those aren’t repairs that are necessary to address right away. After the vehicle has passed your own personal evaluation, the best thing to do is to hand it over to a mechanic to look over. They can assure you that everything is working as it should be under the hood and everywhere else that counts.

Negotiate a Deal

The final step in your used car buying process is to talk numbers! Now that you know all about the condition of the car, you can compare it to similar used cars in the area to get an idea of what others are listed for. It’s not always that simple—but if you know what things are most important to you, you can navigate how to stack up your priorities, what you can compromise on, and what you aren’t willing to budge on. At the end of the day, you can feel confident knowing that you drove away with just the right vehicle for you!
