Four Great Podcasts for That Fall Road Trip! | Steve Landers Auto Group

We’ve all survived another long, hot summer, and the cool breezes of autumn are finally here! That means fall trips to football games, leaf-peeping in the Ozarks, and grandma’s house for Thanksgiving are right around the corner. The downside to getting there is: all that boring time on the interstate, with nothing to fill the hours. Even music gets dull after a while.

Luckily for you, there’s been a podcasting explosion in the past few years, with dozens of informative and well-produced examples of the form coming to the fore, all free for the listening. Seen below are four of our favorite podcasts, in no particular order, each one ready to help you fill the miles with information, entertainment and fun. Speaking of, there’s no better place to listen to them than in the comfort of the great new or used car, truck, van or SUV you bought from Steve Landers Auto Group. With six big dealerships in Oklahoma and Arkansas, we’re sure to have something that will fit both your needs and your budget. So stop in and see us at a Steve Landers dealership close to you, or check out our huge selection online right now!

SPOOKED!

Halloween is fast approaching, and as the nights get longer and the cold wind begins to rattle in the trees, there’s no better time to indulge your curiosity about Things That May Go Bump In the Night. Everybody loves a great ghost story, and the Spooked! Podcast, produced by WNYC Radio, is chock full of them, with most told by the people who experienced things they cannot explain. With excellent production value, music and incredible stories of real-life hauntings and encounters, each episode is a spine-tingling trip into the unknown. Our favorite so far has been “The Iron Gate,” in which an U.S. Army sniper recounts a strange encounter in a Baghdad house where a dark force may still lurks, “Lost in Time,” which features a “Twilight Zone” style trip to a saloon that might be a doorway to the afterlife (and a great ghost story from right here in Arkansas), and “37 Seconds,” in which a pregnant woman tries to convince those around her of a frightening premonition that may cost her or her baby’s life.

COCAINE AND RHINESTONES

As anybody who even sorta pays attention to popular culture can tell you, being an artist is one of those pursuits in which incredibly talented people are often completely destroyed by their own ambitions and appetites, often in spite of themselves. That’s especially so in the field of Country Music, the history of which is littered with broken dreams, broken relationships, broken spirits and broken bodies, and some truly inspiring stories of overcoming the demons that often haunt those of great talent. In the Cocaine and Rhinestones Podcast, host Tyler Mahan Coe dives deep into some of the behind-the-scenes stories that hang like neon around some of country music’s most legendary moments, songs and artists. Some of our favorite episodes have been Coe’s breakdown of the counterculture forces behind Merle Haggard’s hit “Okie from Muskogee,” and his look at the history of Loretta Lynn’s controversial hit “The Pill.” Always insightful, and never dull, it’s sure to fill up some miles.

LOVE + RADIO

Luckily for us, love can exist in a myriad of forms: love for a child, love for a spouse, love for a pet, love for a band, car brand, idea or movement. Sadly, though, it’s just a hop, skip and jump between love and obsession. In this podcast from podcasting powerhouse PRX Radiotopia, captivating interviews, found audio and true tales of obsession collide to form one of the most eclectic and enlightening podcasts ever about the human condition and why people do the things we do. The stories profiled on Love + Radio  are not always easy to listen to and they’re not always tied up in a neat little bow for you at the end, but they are always entertaining. Infinitely bingeable, most are so interesting that you’ll want to listen to one episode after another, and with seven seasons in the can, there’s plenty of opportunity to do just that. Our favorites so far have been “The Machine,” which features the story of Colorado resident Marvin Heemeyer, who used a giant, crudely-armored bulldozer to destroy a good bit of his hometown in 2004, and “The Silver Dollar,” about a black musician who has convinced one KKK member after another renounce racism and hate, just by talking to them.

CRIMINAL
https://thisiscriminal.com/

Ever since Eve stole an apple, stories of crime have riveted listeners. While there’s been an explosion of episodic “True Crime” podcasts like “Serial” that investigate criminal behavior and investigations over many, many episodes, if you’d rather just take one tasty morsel of criminality at a time (is that a thing?) check out the Criminal Podcast. Created by Public Radio veterans Phoebe Judge and Lauren Spohrer, Criminal launched in North Carolina in 2014 and has since become one of the crown jewels of podcasting, with carefully researched stories that often feature interviews with many of the players in an event. New episodes are launched on Fridays twice a month, but there’s a long archive of previous episodes to munch on. Our faves so far have been “Either Or,” about a 1983 case in which a South Carolina judge handed down a shocking verdict to three man convicted of a terrible crime, and “A Bump in the Night,” about a young woman who moves into an apartment she soon believes to be haunted, and it only gets weirder from there.
